Air transportation safety investigation A18W0113

The occurrence

On , a privately operated Kasper Kootenay Wings MS Special Basic Ultralight aircraft was conducting a flight from a private airfield, east of Grande Prairie, Alberta, to John G. Diefenbaker International Airport in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Shortly after takeoff, at an altitude of 500 feet, the aircraft entered a nose down attitude and collided with terrain. The pilot was fatally injured and there was a post-crash fire.

The occurrence

On , a privately operated amateur-built Mosquito XE helicopter was on a flight near Indus/Winters Aire Park Airport, Alberta, with only the pilot on board. While flying along the Highwood River, the helicopter struck a power line at approximately 75 feet above ground level, and then impacted the ground on the river bank. The aircraft was destroyed, and the pilot was fatally injured. There was no post impact fire. The TSB is investigating.

The occurrence

On , a Boeing 737-700 aircraft operated by WestJet, was conducting flight WJA113 from Calgary, Alberta, to Vancouver, British Columbia, with 53 passengers and 5 crew members on board. While climbing through 9000 feet after departure, the flight crew received a cargo fire warning. An emergency was declared and a return to Calgary was requested. After landing, the cargo hold was inspected and evidence was found of a fire in passenger baggage.
